Many bands these days are producing sophisticated music videos that allow for audience engagement and discovery. The people who are finding success in this area are the ones that realize that content is key. If you want a person to find your music, you need to entice them with more than simply a digital download. One way to attract potential fans is through online engagement. And just like other forms of media, one of the best engagement techniques is through the use of video.  Over the years, there has been much development in online video technology.

Video tagging is becoming a popular trend in recent music videos. Tagging allows for audiences to discover more about the band without the gratuitous attention-seeking tactics. These tags can lead viewers and fans to engage with more of what the band has to offer; all the while, expanding on the connection between musician and audience.

Some bands have also started using crowd sourcing techniques. These artists have released music videos that heavily draw upon audience participation.  One of the benefits of this is the fact that you are creating awareness for the video by involving your target audience. Plus, the people that have contributed to the video will be more likely to spread the word and pass it around.

Alternatively, other bands are finding that creating interactive music videos are the way forward. Interactive videos aren’t exactly new. However, having access to creating these types of videos definitely is! A few musicians have started developing music videos that even ask the viewer to choose how the narrative is carried through.  By having the viewer engage with the video, it ensures that that person does not drift away or browse on different tabs. It also encourages repeat viewing, as many viewers are interested in seeing where the alternative versions lead to. Either way you look at it, interactive music videos are immensely effective in generating an active fan base for the video and more importantly for the band itself.

Whichever route an artist wants to take, video technology has allowed musicians to connect with their fan base in new and innovative ways. So the question is: How do you want to engage your fan base?
