"maria's grand, but don't startle the horses"

Opening on Tues July 17, the exhibition runs from July 18th - Aug 17th. Open on Saturdays 12pm - 5pm or by appointment, call 01 678 4077.

This is the ninth in one gallery's series of exhibitions showcasing artists emerging on the Irish scene.

Maria Hildrick's work looks to question how we place value on the objects we surround ourselves with. Toys, statues, trinkets and photos have no intrinsic emotions but are charged with an array of meanings, feelings and memories for those that owned them.

Maria grew up mostly around Dublin and London, frequently moving from one place to another with her family. When the objects that surround you are consistent, but not the places, this instils them with great importance. These paintings contain things that are full of meaning to the artist, but also other found objects that once meant something to someone.

A visual idea of history is represented by layers (from exposed canvass, to drawings, to paints), creating a concept of memory within the work. This can be understood as a tangible reflection of the reminiscences that are a starting point for all these pieces. As with the original objects however, the meaning of the work changes with the viewer.

Maria graduated from the National College of Art and Design last year where she specialised in painting. She now lives and works in Cork.

This is her first solo show.

A vehicle for creative research in emerging art since 2004, one gallery is a non-profit, pro-artist exhibition space housed in design company one production's building in city centre Dublin, where the attic studio white space is utilised to show interesting new art work in any medium. Artists at one receive 100% of sale price for all work.
